With each passing year, we’re seeing an increase in changes to dining, onboard facilities and entertainment as the interest in cruising grows. Dining onboard is not like it used to be, it used to be a dressed up affair and some people still have a misconception of cruising that it is still a very formal experience.
Of course there are still those cruise lines that maintain a traditional approach but there are now many different options to choose from that you can dine whichever way you like.
Our cruise experts have picked out three cruise lines who have adopted well to this way of laid back and informal cruising.
Norwegian Cruise Line
When talking about laid back cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line ranks right at the top because they were the first and only mainstream cruise line to specialise in “Freestyle Cruising” and is very popular with families with children or teenagers.
NCL have a great variety of restaurants on board so that you are spoilt for choice but it also means that you can choose whether you want to dress up or dress down without feeling out of place. The flexible dining option also applies to breakfast so you can enjoy a long lie in bed and not have to worry about getting up in time for breakfast!
Princess Cruises offers the best of both worlds with the choice of Traditional Dining, or Anytime Dining with the flexibility to dine when and with whoever you choose. These cruises are particularly popular with couples or small groups.
The classic traditional dining option allows you to dine at set times with the same table mates and waiting staff each evening. Anytime Dining offers more flexibility, providing the freedom to dine when and with whoever you choose, anytime between 5.30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
There are however still two dress codes which should be observed in the evening in both the Traditional Dining and Anytime Dining restaurants; Smart Casual and Formal.
Oceania is another cruise line which offers a casual dining and dress code onboard. Oceania offers more of a ‘Country Club’ feel and is popular with couples of all ages looking for a high standard of onboard service.
All of their onboard dining is open-seating, allowing guests to dine where and when they choose.
Another benefit of Oceania is that regardless of which restaurant you select there are no dining surcharges so you can enjoy authentic Italian dishes in Toscana or a steak in the Polo Grill all as part of your cruise fare.
