Abu Dhabi is one of the fastest growing mega cities in the Middle East. With a winter average temperature of 24 degrees, it makes for the perfect winter escape.
Iconic and luxurious hotels
Luxury hotels are home to all entertaining and socializing in Abu Dhabi. My favourite hotels is the magical, extravagant and ornate, Emirates Palace. The hotel is a work of art with gold, crystal and mother of pearl interiors, Swarovski chandeliers, even the ATM dispenses solid gold bars!
Architectural wonders are all around in Abu Dhabi. The most famous landmarks are the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, a beautiful building that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Capital Gate, the world’s furthest leaning tower and modern day “Leaning Tower of Pisa” and Al Jahili Fort, the most historic building in UAE.
My favourite days
One of the best beach areas is Yas Beach on Yas Island, a blissful new development with shimmering turquoise waters and a huge stretch of powder-soft white sand. You can buy a day pass for around £12 and spend a day of relaxation. I loved my lazy afternoon here. For the thrill-seekers out there, you should visit the world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World, home to the world’s fastest roller coaster.
For a memorable shopping experience and to observe the traditional way of doing business visit one of the diverse markets and pick up a special souvenir, like local spices, silks, perfume and wooden carvings.
Which cruise lines visit Abu Dhabi ?
You can visit Abu Dhabi as a segment of a world cruise voyage with Cunard Line, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas.
In 2016 and for the first time ever, Celebrity Cruises will be sailing from Abu Dhabi, around Arabia, perfect for adding a pre or post Abu Dhabi city extension to really immerse yourself in this desert metropolis.
If you are just visiting for the day, then opt for one of the many city tours on offer. If you have extended your stay then I really recommend experiencing the real desert with thrilling dune bashing or an exhilarating desert safari.
Top tip : Exchange your British pounds in Abu Dhabi – you get a much better rate. You can find currency exchangers in all shopping malls.
