Croatian gem, Dubrovnik has become one of our “must do” ports of call and last year over 1 million visitors enjoyed this fascinating city. It's popularity is likely to continue to grow with scenes from the Game of Thrones television series having been filmed there.
Step back in time
To get the most from this city I would set off for a walk around the city walls, the medieval streets are filled with nooks and crannies, fortresses, Baroque churches and historic squares all dating back to the 16th century.
There are many cafés and restaurants dotted around to recharge and people watch. We enjoyed some amazing ice-cream, found a quiet bench down near a small harbour and relaxed after our walk.
If you are organised to be up and off the ship first thing in the morning then head for the open air market near the cathedral. I love to people watch and here you can see the locals buying seasonal vegetables, fruits and cheeses. Around the market you will smell fresh dried lavender.
Why not take a bunch home as souvenir? The scent will remind you of this special Croatian city for months to come!

The coastal views across to nearby islands are breath taking and my lasting memory of Dubrovnik is the azure blue colour of the sea. The water is crystal clear and a perfect contrast to the warm orange tones of the stone work. We managed to take a drive round the coast and stopped at one of the many scenic photo points to capture our day.
Or as an alternative you could catch the cable car from just outside the city and take in the stunning vistas across the sea and the old town. There is no need to pre book as it runs every few minutes to the top of Mount Srdj.
