Puerto Rico has been voluntarily associated with the United States since it was ceded by Spain in 1898. In 1952, this island country became a self-governing commonwealth territory of the United States. The capital, San Juan, is a teeming city of over 1.5 million. Remnants of colonial architecture stand side by side with the most modern high rises in this city of contrasts. The 7-square-block area, which contains the historic zone of Old San Juan, was once completely encircled by city walls and is still guarded by the impressive forts of El Morro and San Cristobal, which loom over the harbor as reminders of the centuries of Spanish rule. El Yunque rainforest, on the northeastern side of the island, is just one of many distinctive geographical features found here. Mountain lakes, waterfalls, teak forests, and three magnificent phosphorescent bays offer the visitor a variety of diversions.

The island presents a rich culture of a French-Caribbean style; while its official language is French, the natives often speak Martinican Creole, which combines elements of French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and African languages. Even on this Caribbean island, the finest in French products can be had at its numerous boutiques.

Barbados has retained many of the trappings of its British colonial heritage. Judges and barristers wear proper robes and wigs, police don helmets styled after London bobbies and cricket remains a national passion. Barbados also has all the sporting appeal of the rest of the Caribbean, with pristine beaches, powerful surf and crystal clear waters. Brightly colored homes and hibiscus flowers mingle with mahogany trees and English churches dating back to the 17th century.

Before they were a notorious penal colony, the Iles de Salut (Islands of Salvation) provided French colonists with a welcome escape from the fever-ridden jungles of the Guiana mainland. Lying ten miles off the coastline, and swept by treacherous ocean currents, the trio of small islands provided a perfect isolated location for incarcerating criminals without danger or expense, since the shark-infested sea and the trackless jungles ashore precluded any possibility of escape. All three islands, popularly known as Devil's Island, were used as a prison from 1852 to 1953. Your day is free to explore the prison ruins or search for signs of the surprisingly abundant wildlife.

Recife, meaning "reef," was named for the great natural mass of coral which lies off its coast. The city is made up of three sections: the mainland, the peninsula, and the island. Bridges of stone and iron connect the three. Founded by fishermen and sailors in the first half of the 16th century, the city grew rapidly along with the sugarcane and slave trades. The city continues to grow, and now skyscrapers are crowding out the beautiful colonial mansions of the sugar era. Today the city is known as a beach resort, and it is one of northeast Brazil's most popular tourist destinations.

As one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the world, Parati, which means "white fish," is protected by UNESCO. The city exudes a magical and romantic ambience with its gas lights, well-preserved colonial houses, gardens and winding streets. Parati's history goes back to the early 1530s and is full of tales of pirates, gold, romance and mystery. As the second most important port in Brazil, Parati Harbor was built in the 17th and 18th centuries for the export of gold to Portugal, and as the center of southern Brazil's slave trade. The economy of Parati later turned to sugar cane with a multitude of mills that produced Brazil's high quality spirit known as "pinga" or cachaça.

In 1883, a German businessman, Adolf Luderitz, purchased a parcel of land enclosing a small bay for purposes of speculation. The so-called Skeleton Coast had limited potential in many ways, being largely made up of the shifting sands of the Namib Desert. Then, in 1906, a local railway worker noticed an oddly sparkly stone beside the tracks. It proved to be a diamond, and it became clear that there were many like it lying literally on the surface of the sands. By 1909 a diamond rush was in full sway, and a thriving, German-styled town called Kolmanskop sprouted out of the desert to house the gem-seekers. When the easy pickings ended, the townspeople simply walked away, and the desert climate preserved the town as it was slowly engulfed by the shifting sands. Today it makes an evocative and haunting place to visit. The bay still hosts a bounty of wildlife as well, including seals, whales and flamingos. Other endeavors have started, too, such as the culture of delicious oysters in the clean, cold ocean waters.

The first area to be settled by Europeans in the 17th century, it is today a major seaport and the legislative capital of South Africa. The feeling here is not African but cosmopolitan, and a sense of history remains.

Long known by its previous French name Fort Dauphin, this was an important port for the island nation until deterioration of the roads limited its effectiveness in the late 20th century. Today it is reactivated by the major ilmenite mining operations being initiated nearby. For us, it is also a good vantage point from which to explore some of the island’s exotic indigenous flora and fauna. Both of these are easily visited at the Saiadi or the Nahampoana Botanic Gardens, where several species of lemurs may be viewed, as well as other oddities such as chameleons, tortoises and crocodiles. The exotic plants of the Malagasy Spiny Forest are also on view, as are local species of orchids. For a breathtaking overview, ambitious visitors can hike up the 1,700-foot St. Louis Peak, possibly followed by a swim at the popular Libanona Beach.

Tall, verdant Reunion is the sort of tropical island Central Casting would send if a director were looking for the perfect island paradise. Steep volcanic peaks covered with lush forest are ringed by sugary white beaches in an achingly blue sea. It is also an overseas department of France, which only adds to its glamour, although its inclusion in the Eurozone seems almost laughable due to its location in the Indian Ocean. La Possession on the island’s northeastern coast occupies an enviably horizontal wedge between steep peaks, and gives access to ships. Visitors may spot the commune’s coat of arms, a silver dodo bird topped by a pair of foreboding axes. Interesting sites include the dramatic cirques (dormant volcanic craters with fairytale villages in them) and plantations dedicated to essential perfume oils and spices such as cinnamon, vanilla and cloves. In the town, and antique engine beside the the defunct railway station and the ruined lazarette of the fortification are atmospheric backdrops for photographs.

Try a "gateaux," a local sweet, before heading to Tamarind Falls - actually a string of seven waterfalls set in a breathtaking green valley. Visit the Crocodile Park not only for its namesake inhabitants, but for tortoises and other local wildlife. The world's most peculiarly shaped island, Sulawesi has been said to resemble an open-jawed crocodile. Lying between Kalimantan (Borneo) and Maluku, Sulawesi is Indonesia's third-largest island, with an area of 67,000 square miles. The population of multi-racial Sulawesi is almost 11 million. An amazing diversity of societies exists here, with a distinct contrast of old and new, traditional and modern within the many cultures themselves. There are the fiercely Islamic Bugis and Makassarese of the south, the animist-Christian Torajans in the south-central region, and the prosperous Christian Minahasans of the north. This variety, along with some spectacular scenery, makes Sulawesi a popular destination, especially in the southern area and Toraja. However, Sulawesi also contains some of Indonesia's most remote jungle areas, with unusual flora and fauna and relatively unknown tribes.

Coron is the largest town on Busuanga island in the province of Palawan. The town and the islands just offshore are a magnet for visitors seeking crystal-clear waters, fascinating sea life and no fewer than ten well-preserved shipwrecks from WWII. Coron Island is a popular choice, with numerous spectacular snorkeling sites, including Siete Pecados, the Twin Lagoons and Atuwayan Beach. One interesting phenomenon here is a reverse thermocline, with the water being warmer at depth, where it is heated by the volcanic activity that lurks beneath the islands, and cooler nearer the surface. One place where this is dramatically evident is at Busuanga Island’s Maquinit Hot Springs, one of the very few saltwater hot springs in the world. A visit here should include a dip in the spa-like set of pools that vary in temperature from hot to cooler.

The port of Manila is the largest and most important in the archipelago. The city of Manila proper, which boasts the densest population in the world, is really only the center of a larger urban cluster called Manila Metro, housing over 12 million people. Most visitors will be attracted to the oldest section, called Intramuros, to see Spanish colonial architectural icons such as the Manila Cathedral or the ancient San Agustin church. The city’s Binondo neighborhood is the oldest Chinatown on earth, predating the arrival of the Spanish in the mid-18th Century. Rizal Park, in the area called Ermita, is home to many museums, themed gardens and other notable sights. An overnight stay will enable you to enjoy the renowned Manila sunset along the Baywalk, and also leave time for a visit to the important historical site of Corregidor Island in Manila Bay, the site of an Allied surrender in World War II, and then the triumphant return of General Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines.
