Best-known as the site of the trial of Joan of Arc, Rouen is situated in Normandy 75 miles up the River Seine from the English Channel. Enjoy the delightful scenery as you sail up the Seine to the ‘city of a hundred spires’, boasting wonderful Gothic architecture including the magnificent Cathédrale Notre Dame. Upstream from the city is Giverny, the village where Monet spent the last years of his life or, if time permits, take an excursion to Paris.

This pretty little town, at the mouth of the River Seine, makes a perfect finale to a spectacular cruise. The old harbour and marina are just delightful and the narrow streets and alleys of the old quarter are little changed since French medieval times. Claude Monet’s famous garden at Givenchy, the Normandy Landings beaches and even the Bayeux Tapestry are all within reach.

Genteel describes the lovely Georgian harbourfront architecture of the little town of Tobermory, whilst rugged is a more apt description for the wild moorland and mountainous interior of the Isle of Mull. Take a trip on the Mull Railway or visit tiny traffic-free Iona, where St Columba first brought Christianity in 563 AD.

Portree, capital of the Isle of Skye, is the largest of the Inner Hebrides, renowned in history and song and well known for its iconic castles and natural beauty. The capital and administrative centre of the Orkney Islands, set on the principal island known as Mainland. The Orkneys comprise 70 or so islands, rocks and skerries that cover an area of 376 square miles. You can still detect the Norse influence and the Stone Age settlement at Skara Brae, older than either the Pyramids or Stonehenge, is fascinating.
