VENICE is a city frozen in the mists of time, ancient yet thoroughly modern. Somehow it survives built on a series of wooden poles that sink deep into the mud and flowing water of the Adriatic underneath the city. World-renowned city of canals and bridges. These facilitate internal transportation and have a beauty and charm that draw countless visitors each year. The modern city embraces the whole 90-mile (145-kilometer) perimeter of the lagoon and includes ten principal islands in addition to those of the mother city and two industrial boroughs of Mestre and Marghera on the mainland.

Palma belongs to Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, measuring about 75km /47 miles from north to south and 100km/62 miles from east to west. The beautiful scenery, the mild climate and the copious amount of accommodation make the island a major European tourist centre. Any visitor who arrives in Palma by boat or ship discovers a city spread across the curve of a wide bay, with its proud cathedral standing guard like its former days of maritime glory.

Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region. It lies along the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Besós and Llobregat. In the Northwest a set of hills run parallel to the coast. In the Southwest the old town lies along the port and is divided by the famous “La Rambla”. Today Barcelona is Spain's second biggest city as far as population is concerned and it is the main industrial centre of the country. Barcelona hosts two universities, several museums and libraries and has been a cultural and artistic centre since the Middle Ages.

Cadiz is thought to be the oldest city in Europe. The location of the city of Cadiz is supreme. It is like a tongue stretching out into the Cadiz bay, which forms a fortified peninsula connected to firm land. Under the Phoenician rule it was called Gadir. Unlike other cities Cadizs appearance remains old, quaint but very kempt. As other Andalusian cities, it stands out for its Moorish architecture, narrow cobbled stone streets and the easy going personality of the south.

The great Portuguese poet, playwright and author, Júlio Dinis famously described Funchal as; “The sea on one side, the mountains on the other, and between these two majestic splendours, the city smiles like a child sleeping, safe and warm, between its parents.” We can’t think of a prettier and more inviting introduction to this beautiful Mediterranean haven. Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira is the very soul of Portugal. Settlers over 500 years ago were attracted to this sheltered spot, which is set in a natural ‘amphitheatre’. Gentle slopes, abundant with flowers, rise above the pretty harbour to almost 1200 metres. The magnificent bay of Funchal, with its glittering blue waters is home to the port, just a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Thanks to its strategic mid-Atlantic location, Madeira has been an important stopping point for ocean-going liners for many years and was an important port of call for the routes on cruise ships between Europe and Africa and America. As part of your Mediterranean cruise vacation with MSC Cruises, your luxury cruise liner will also call in at this exquisite holiday destination. As an Italian company, MSC Cruises is renowned for offering some of the best luxury cruise package deals around. Both the French and the Dutch claim the island of St. Maarten. The powers signed a treaty in 1648 that divided the island between them, though the two sides have distinct cultural characteristics. But it is their differences that add to the charm of this Caribbean hideaway and makes for some of the most delightful cuisine known throughout the world. Between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond the Dutch capital Philipsburg fills a small stretch of land, and two main roads Front Street and Back Street cut across the city. Front Street is the main thoroughfare, featuring traditional West Indian architecture and duty free shopping of imported goods and native crafts .

St. Thomas is the busiest of the three United States Virgin Islands. With 28 square miles of lush green hills and sandy beaches, St. Thomas and the nearby island of St. John see nearly 1.7 million visitors a year. It is the second largest and most sophisticated of the Virgin Islands with a strong Danish influence especially evident in Charlotte Amalie, the main town and capital. Originally called Taphaus, or Tap House, it is now named after a Danish queen. The island's historic attractions should not be ignored. Its colourful history dates back at least several thousand years. The early Indians had disappeared by the time Denmark settled St. Thomas, but the Danes left their mark in many ways.
