This diversity is reflected in the variety of culinary styles and Panamanian dishes, which are a unique blend of Spanish, African and Native American cuisine. When not dining at one of the city’s many renowned restaurants, be sure to visit the neighborhood of Casco Viejo, the historic heart of Panama City, and the Calle Uruguay district for its vibrant nightlife; hike through acres and acres national parks and the rainforest at Parque Natural Metropolitano, located just minutes from downtown; and of course, a trip to the Miraflores locks to watch huge ships travel along the iconic Panama Canal. Set against a beautiful backdrop of steep green hills and a pristine rainforest, the port town of Golfito overlooks tranquil Golfito Bay and is a gateway to Puerto Jimenez, the renowned Osa Peninsula, and Corcovado National Park—one of the few remaining large, lowland tropical rainforests in the world. (With an overnight stay here, you’ll have a fantastic opportunity to join one of our Land Discoveries® day tours and explore these incredible areas.) Golfito also has some of the best beaches in Costa Rica, and combined with its many marinas and boats, it features spectacular sport fishing, yachting, surfing and other water sports. Nature lovers will also appreciate Golfito: As Costa Rica’s only city situated within a declared protection area, it’s home to hundreds of species of rare flora, fauna, birds and animals.

It’s renowned for sport fishing, particularly marlin, and draws anglers in from all over the world. Other nearby attractions range from the Butterfly Botanical Gardens and the Damas Estuary with its maze of wetlands, crocodiles, herons and monkeys, to the Naranjo River and Savegre River for white-water rafting and the Damas Caves to see stalagmites and stalactites. Just 20 miles south of Caldera are two forest reserves—the Biological Reserve of Carara, and a preserve that encompasses the islands of Guayabo, Negritos and Los Pajaros—and both are known for their large and diverse populations of forest and aquatic birds.
