4 Praia da Rocha
A jewel of a resort on Portugal's Algarve, Praia da Rocha is famous for the glorious beach which stretches along its restaurant and café-lined waterfront.

This is a great port of call for a `chill-out' day spent simply browsing the shops and enjoying golden sands and sapphire-blue waters. But, if you are feeling active, there is also the 17th century Fortress of Santa Catarina to explore at one end of the beach. At the other end is a tunnel which connects the main beach to a chain of smaller, uncrowded ones, overlooked by rugged cliffs and full of dramatic rock formations.

7 Barcelona
Explore Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, and you'll discover the ornately wrought works of Antonio Gaudi. A local architect, whose works culminate in the surrealistic spires of the yet to be finished Sagrada Familia. Take a stroll down the colourful Ramblas. Explore the Gothic Quarter. Ride a cable car to the summit of Montjuic. Or sample local wines and authentic tapas as you watch the hustle and bustle of daily life pass you by.

9 Portofino
The great lure from Santa Margherita is the village of Portofino. Here, chic cafés and restaurants, houses painted in terracotta and an impossibly pretty harbour epitomise everyone's image of Italy. In Santa Margherita you'll discover classical villas, formal gardens and a profusion of flowers. The perfect place to while away a lazy day, if only Portofino wasn't so seductively close!

13 Gibraltar
To the ancient Greeks and Romans, Gibraltar was one of the two pillars of Hercules, set up by the mythical hero to mark the edge of the known world. Today it's home to the most famous rock in the world. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see across to Africa. From the top of Europa Point to the subterranean depths of St Michael's Cave, your visit will be filled with interesting sights and sounds.
