I embarked on my first ever cruise with my wife last year. It was on board the Dawn Princess and was a cruise of New Zealand.
We embarked from Melbourne after a week spent there – we had never been to Australia either! Embarkation was very straightforward with our luggage being handled and delivered to our cabin.
We seemed to be amongst the youngest on the ship, which my wife loved! (We are both in out mid 40’s, great to feel young again!) And although we were told there were over 1,500 passengers on board, the ship never felt crowded.
In general the food was good, lots of choice however we did start to see the same things beginning to appear on some nights. What I will say is that the waiting staff and service were excellent, always welcoming and ever helpful.
There was plenty to see and do on board and as mentioned the top deck never felt crowded so it was easy to get a spot beside the pool or with a good view.
My wife and I don’t really like going on tours or pre-arranged excursions, which by the look of them were rather expensive anyway, we much prefer to explore places by ourselves which we did.
From the perspective of a first time cruiser, I had a great time and would certainly consider booking another on a ship of similar size. New Zealand was an incredibly beautiful country and the highlight was the Fjordland on the South Island - the waterfalls were breathtaking!
