Day 8 - Milazzo (Sicily)

Arrive: Wed 27 April 2022 / Depart: Wed 27 April 2022

Dating back as far as 648 BC, when the Greeks founded a colony called Mylae, Milazzo’s colourful history has helped to shape the town today. Perched on top of a hill overlooking the town, is Castello di Milazzo, a sprawling citadel that was originally the site of a Greek acropolis. The site changed hands many times throughout history, with the Arabs, Normans, Aragonese and Swabians among the groups to have added to the original site. Today, the citadel’s sprawling grounds are a great place to wander around, with the cathedral and Benedictine convent particular highlights, in addition to the excellent views over the bay below. Milazzo is also a popular starting point to explore the Aeolian Islands, situated north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This group of seven islands have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an excellent example of volcanic island-building. The islands are wonderfully varied and dramatic, with rocky coastlines, mountainous landscapes and black sandy beaches, as well as Stromboli, one of Italy’s three active volcanoes, on the island of the same name.

Day 8 - Cruising by Stromboli

Day 9 - At Sea

Day 9 - Strait of Messina

Day 10 - Katakolon

Arrive: Fri 29 April 2022 / Depart: Fri 29 April 2022

This sleepy port in the Peloponnese lies near the site of Olympia. In this wooded valley the original Olympic Games between Greek city states began in 776 BC. Following the calendar based on Olympia, contestants met every four years to race, wrestle and sing for the prized olive wreath from the sacred tree by the temple of Zeus.

Day 11 - Argostoli

Arrive: Sat 30 April 2022 / Depart: Sat 30 April 2022

With its palm-lined cobbled promenade, stunning beaches and vibrant town centre, Argostoli is the perfect place to soak up the glorious Mediterranean sunshine while enjoying unique Greek culture. Surrounded by gorgeous azure waters and boasting a beautiful natural harbour, Kefalonia’s is also the island's largest port town. Despite being a modern, commercial town, Argostoli’s tradition and heritage oozes from its charming architecture, vibrant squares and pretty landscapes. Lithostroto – the main street in the town centre – is the hub of the town and home to a number of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Kampanas Square – found in the middle of Lithostroto – offers superb views of the town and the beautiful Koutavos Lagoon. Just a short distance from the town centre you will discover the impressive Agion Theodoron Lighthouse. Rebuilt in 1953 after an earthquake destroyed the original 19th century building, the lighthouse has a unique design that features 20 columns and a small tower.

Day 12 - Cruising Corinth Canal

Day 13 - Ermoupoli

Arrive: Mon 02 May 2022 / Depart: Mon 02 May 2022

In contrast to many of Greece’s most famous towns and cities, which are often overcrowded with visitors exploring ancient monuments and world-famous landmarks, Ermoupoli remains relatively undiscovered. But this isn’t to say that the capital of Syros doesn’t have much to recommend it. Spread out across the slopes of two tall hills on the island’s east coast, Ermoupoli is a maze of multi-coloured and typically Greek whitewashed houses which, when explored, reveal a number of attractions from galleries and museums to shops, bars, restaurants and Ouzeries. Among the main highlights are Town Hall Square, found in the very heart of the town, where you can admire some of the Ermoupoli’s finest architecture, including one of the largest town halls in Greece. Also worth visiting are the Apollo Theatre, the Industrial Museum and the pretty Agios Georgios Cathedral. This cathedral sits atop Ano Syros hill and offers fantastic views of the town, the neighbouring islands and the surrounding ocean. The elegant Vaporia district harks back to days when Ermoupoli was a thriving shipbuilding centre, with its palm-lined squares and grand old shipmakers mansions.

Day 14 - Athens

Arrive: Tue 03 May 2022 / Depart: Tue 03 May 2022

The port of Piraeus brings you to Athens, one of the great names of antiquity, the city of Plato and Socrates, a cradle of Western civilisation and birthplace of democracy. You can step in to that history on the heights of the Acropolis with its glorious 2,500-years-old Parthenon dating from the Golden Age of Classical Greece. Below, in the heart of the city lies the ancient Plaka District's honeycomb of streets, little shops - and tavernas that come alive at night with the pulse of bouzouki.

Day 15 - Rhodes

Arrive: Wed 04 May 2022 / Depart: Wed 04 May 2022

Largest island of the Dodecanese, Rhodes was the headquarters of the crusader Knights of St John before defeat by the Ottoman Turks. Within the capital's massive citadel walls the medieval Old Town presents a hive of narrow cobbled streets, dominated by the Avenue of the Knights and imposing Palace of the Grand Masters. More modern distractions await in the New Town while nearby is picturesque Lindos, clustered below a hilltop acropolis and Crusader Castle.

Day 16 - Aghios Nikolaos, Crete

Arrive: Thu 05 May 2022 / Depart: Thu 05 May 2022

Built around a pretty lake against a backdrop of imposing red-rock cliffs and tall trees, Agios Nikolaos is one of Crete’s most picturesque towns. A vibrant ‘resort’ throughout the holiday season, the town attracts thousands of visitors every year thanks to its blend of natural beauty, cultural attractions, interesting historic sites and fantastic beaches. Although Agios Nikolaos appears imposing, with its typically Greek whitewashed buildings towering over Lake Voulisméni and Merabello Bay, it is in fact very easy to explore on foot. Taking a stroll along the town’s tree-lined streets, alleys and boulevards in the Mediterranean sunshine is the best way to take in the attractions. Plenty of bars, shops and restaurants serving fine local cuisine, several charming Byzantine-era churches and interesting archaeological, folklore and national history museums all await discovery. The stunning marina and sandy beach of Ammus are well worth taking the short walk from the town centre to discover too.

Day 17 - At Sea

Day 18 - Malta

Arrive: Sat 07 May 2022 / Depart: Sat 07 May 2022

Strategically situated midway between Sicily and North Africa, Malta is in every sense a Mediterranean crossroads - a tiny island with an epic and heroic history in which invasion and siege have seen the influence Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Crusaders and, of course, Britain all leave an enduring mark upon its cultural heritage. The16th century walled capital of Valletta with its Grand Harbour is a treasure-chest bristling with Baroque architecture, its narrow streets a tempting honeycomb of colourful shops and stalls.

Day 19 - At Sea

Day 20 - Ibiza

Arrive: Mon 09 May 2022 / Depart: Mon 09 May 2022

Ibiza is most famous for it's summer parties, with thousands of people descending upon the island to enjoy the nightlife. However, large parts of the island are World Heritage Sites. One spectacular site is El Vedra, a nature reserve said to be the third most magnetic point on earth.

Day 21 - Cartagena, Spain

Arrive: Tue 10 May 2022 / Depart: Tue 10 May 2022

Today Spain's major commercial port and naval base, Cartagena lies on the coast of Murcia, its great indented bay guarded by rocky promontories, each topped by a fort. Founded in 221 BC by Hasdrubal, leader of the Carthaginians (hence the name) from North Africa, it has a fascinating history - and as Nova Carthage was long the Romans' principal settlement in their Iberian stronghold. Attractive promenades extend along the harbour, while to the northeast is the famous beach and watersports resort area of the lagoon-like Mar Menor.

Day 22 - At Sea

Day 23 - Lisbon

Arrive: Thu 12 May 2022 / Depart: Thu 12 May 2022

It was from historic Lisbon, built on seven low hills beside the wide Tagus estuary, that some of Europe's greatest explorers set sail in pursuit of the riches that built Portugal's former global empire in the New World, Africa and the Indies. Memories of that glorious past linger amid the grand avenues and elegant squares of the attractive capital's 18th century lower town - a vivid contrast with the colourful honeycomb of cobbled streets in the old Moorish Alfama quarter and the bohemian mood of the hilly Bairro Alto.
