Day 1 - Tokyo

Arrive: Sun 12 September 2021 / Depart: Sun 12 September 2021 at 23:00

A city of vast proportions, Tokyo is also one of the most dynamic and exhilarating cities in the world. At one time known as Edo, or ‘Gate of the River’ for its location at the mouth of the Sumidagawa River, it first gained importance in 1603, when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his military government, or ‘shogunate’ here. From a little-known backwater town, Edo grew into a city from which the Tokugawa clan governed all of Japan. By the late-18th century, it had become the most populous city in the world. When the Tokugawa clan fell from power and the authority of the emperor was restored in 1868, he moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo. At this point, the city also was renamed Tokyo, which means ‘Eastern Capital’.

Day 2 - At Sea

Day 3 - Kobe

Arrive: Tue 14 September 2021 at 08:00

Located on the calm waters of the Inland Sea, Kobe has served as an important port town for hundreds of years. It was one of the first harbors to accept foreign traders in 1868 when Japan was just emerging from its centuries of isolation. What followed was a surge of Western trade and exports. Today, Kobe is quite multicultural, with expatriates from 98 different nations in residence, providing a cultural diversity most easily visible in restaurants serving every kind of cuisine, including the now world-famous Kobe beef. The Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 set back Kobe's development, but not for long. Kobe emerged more vibrant than before - with additional attractions, hotels and urban redevelopment, and only a few remnants of the extensive damage. It is a cosmopolitan place with lively shopping arcades, interesting museums, great restaurants and a port that is still at the heart of things. Kobe is well known for its nightlife, in an intimate quarter of neon lights, cozy bars and sophisticated nightclubs. It also serves as the gateway to the ancient Japanese capitals of Kyoto and Nara.

Day 6 - Hiroshima

Arrive: Fri 17 September 2021 at 07:00 / Depart: Fri 17 September 2021 at 15:00

Hiroshima was founded in 1593 when a castle was built at the mouth of the Ota River. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the harbor was enlarged and the Kobe to Shimonoseki railway is routed through Hiroshima. The town gained more prominence during the first Sino-Japanese War in 1894-5 as the Imperial Headquarters. The continual growth of Hiroshima saw it as the nations seventh largest city by 1941 when Japan enters WWII. Hiroshima escapes allied bombing until August 6th, 1945, when Hiroshima suffered humankind's first nuclear-weapons tragedy. The devastation was almost complete, but reconstruction begins in 1949. By 1974, Hiroshima has doubled its pre-war population and has become the International City of Peace.

Arrive: Thu 23 September 2021 at 07:00 / Depart: Thu 23 September 2021 at 20:00

Located in the southern part of Hokkaido Island, Hakodate was founded during the feudal era and one of the first Japanese ports opened to international trade. In 1854, Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy arrived and a treaty was signed, opening Hakodate, Yokohama and Nagasaki to trade with the West. Soon, a customs office was established, treaty countries opened consulates in the city, and foreign culture and technology were introduced. The subsequent influx of foreign settlers left a lasting influence, which is apparent in the Euro-American style architecture that still exists today.
