Three of our Cruise Experts were lucky enough to be invited onboard MS Koningsdam  recently to discover this Pinnacle Class Ship.

Sandra, Karen and Abby all experienced a short Mediterranean Cruise - find out more about what they had to say about this fantastic new ship below.

Koning means "king" in Dutch and this ship celebrates Holland America Line's long association with the Dutch Royal Family. It also reflects a new era as His Majesty King Willem-Alexander becomes the first king of the Netherlands for more than 100 years. Following her maiden voyage the ship will embark on a series of 12-day itineraries sailing the Mediterranean.

Food & Drink

The main dining spans two floors and offers fine sea views throughout. This restaurant with it's stunning architecture and centrepiece of a two-story wine tower will showcase the finest vintages from the Holland America cellar making this a dining room for real connoisseurs.  Menus will be created by the expert chefs in Holland America’s Culinary Council.

The Pinnacle Grill offers exceptional dining and is open for lunch and dinner and will serve seafood and beef dishes inspired by America’s Pacific Northwest.

In Tamarind guests can sample exotic flavours inspired by the culinary traditions of Japan, Southeast Asia and China. The menu has been specially created by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin.

Canaletto offers fine Italian fare with classic pasta dishes available alongside veal, grilled fish and pork loin along with a range of sumptuous deserts such as gelato and tiramusu.

For some delicious comfort food Dive-In puts a gourmet spin on favourites such as burgers and hot dogs with creative topping and brioche buns.

Explorations café offers a range of delicious hot beverages and pastries along with a range of books, destination guides and crossword puzzles supplied by the New York Times.

“My favourite restaurant was Tamarind which offered culinary traditions from Japan, Asia and China. The standard of service was incredible and the overall atmosphere and experience was very authentic. Tamarind has a small surcharge of $20.00 per person but it was worth every penny. The dishes serviced were delicious and I really enjoyed being able to try different dishes from sushi to lobster”

The Queen’s Lounge has been specially redesigned for ms Koningsdam and is now an elegant theatre with two levels. It will host entertainment events and will be home the eight-piece BB King’s Blues Club band. It also features the largest dance floor on the ship allowing guests to fully enjoy the music as they enjoy some world class performances.

The Casino also offers a range of favourite table games alongside plenty of electronic slot machines with staff always keen to teach beginners some new skills.

“The entertainment on board was first class with fantastic live music every night. I loved B.B King’s Blues Lounge with the best of Memphis music at sea…we danced the night away to the band and enjoyed delicious cocktails ! On quieter evenings, we headed to The Crow’s Nest, the perfect place to enjoy a few pre-dinner drinks whilst admiring the views, captured by the wraparound windows”

The Fitness Center features a range of cardio equipment and weight machines with fitness classes offering yoga and pilates. For further sporting pursuits there’s a sports court, jogging track and two outdoor pools. There’s also a promenade surrounding the whole ship offering the perfect place for a stroll or even a run.

There is an array of shopping options on board from the duty free available in the signature shops to the luxury jewellery boutique Merabella.

Guests can learn new skills with cooking classes in the Culinary Arts Center presented by Food & Wine Magazine. There are also a range of cooking demonstrations  showcasing regional specialities as the ship sails to new destinations.

There are a range of programmes to keep children from the ages of 3 to 17 entertained, all supervised by specially trained staff. Young children can participate in treasure hunts, learn new arts and crafts and even pizza making. Those between 8 and 12 can enjoy dance parties, video games as well and get active with races. Teenagers have their own spaces to spend time such as The Loft and The Oasis which stay open late.

“I absolutely loved the pool decks, they are so spacious and there is an adults only area with pool, Jacuzzis and a bar. The main pool area will brilliant too, it has a retractable roof which was great as it was warm even when the weather wasn’t at its best and it was perfect for watching a movie under the stars, such a unique fun way to enjoy the latest blockbusters”
