The Kimberley - MEET THE TEAM:

Maria Patricia Silva - Ornithologist & Naturalist

Patricia was born in Uruguay and studied biology in the University of Mar del Plata in Argentina. Patricia began her field studies working with lizards in northern Argentina in a project supported by the World Wildlife Fund. And gained a Ph.D. on the reproduction and foraging ecology of Kelp Gulls in Antarctic and Subantarctic environments. To date Patricia has taken part in twelve Antarctic Research Expeditions, has written more than fifty scientific papers and has worked onboard expedition vessels since 2000. She is also working on conservation projects for albatrosses and petrels interacting with fisheries in the Southern Ocean.


Franz Bairlein - Ornithologist

Franz studied biology, chemistry and physics and gained a PhD at the University of Konstanz in Germany. Franz held a Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Council at the Zoological Institute of the University of Koeln and after nine years here became a director of the Institute of Avian Research at Wilhelmshaven, one of the world’s leading research centres in ornithology. Since 1992, Franz is a professor of zoology and ecology at the University of Oldenburg and is a member of the International Ornithological Committee, President of the German Ornithologists’ Society, European Union for Bird Ringing, and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Ornithology.


Conrad Combrink - Director Expedition Cruises

As Director of Expedition Cruises, Conrad is in charge of all expeditions programme development, expedition staff, and is a Senior Expedition Leader on many Silversea Expeditions. Before joining Silversea, Conrad had worked in expedition cruising for more than 10 years and has a passion for expedition travel that has taken him to all seven continents. Conrad holds a degree in tourism management and is a native of Cape Town, South Africa.


Robin L. Aiello - Marine Biologist

Robin is a graduate of Harvard University with the highest honors in Evolutionary Biology and Marine Biology and has spent most of her life on, and under, the oceans of the world. Her work as a scientific Expedition Leader has led her to some of the most exotic and remote areas of the world and she is a frequent keynote speaker and past recipient of the Australian EcoWarrior Award and the International Earth Ambassador Award.


Juan Carlos Restrepo - Expedition Leader & Geologist

Juan holds a Masters degree in Geology from the Universidad de Caldas, in Colombia and spends his time between both Antarctica and the high Arctic, both as Expedition Leader and geology Lecturer. His passion for travel and the great outdoors have taken Juan to all continents and oceans of the world but when not on board he returns home to sunny Colombia and enjoys his favourite past times of paragliding and motorbike touring.

Dr. Claire Allum - Archaeologist / Anthropologist

Claire has been fascinated by ancient and modern cultures around the world and has dug archaeological sites and studied modern cultures in both the New and Old World. Her research highlights include living with the Chachi in the Ecuadorian jungle, excavating in the highlands of Peru, surveying and digging early Asante sites in Ghana, working in the Great Plains and Subarctic of Canada and working on an ancient Maya site in Belize. Claire is also co-author of the book Ancient Travellers.

Hans Peter Reinthaler - Botanist

Hans holds a doctorate in Natural Science from Karl-Franzens University in Graz, Austria and is a published scientist and experienced lecturer. Having worked extensively on ships in many different parts of the world, he has significant experience with a vast variety of ecosystems, flora and fauna and has a sincere love and enthusiasm for his work, with lecture topics including: Flora & Fauna, Animal & Plant Interactions, Evolution, and Consequences & Influence of Climate Changes on Biodiversity and Ecosystems.


Christian Walter - Historian

Christian was born in Switzerland and raised in Germany and attended school in Germany and Chile (Instituto Aleman and Universidad Austral). His experience and expertise in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, history and art eventually led him to lecture aboard expedition ships. Having worked on a comparative study of Easter Island’s petroglyphs and their possible relationship with the island’s unique writing system Rongo Rongo, his main interests are the history of exploration and the art of the Pacific Islands.


Greg Calvert - Biologist

Greg is a biologist, with a deep passion for tropical plants and animals and holds a degree in botany and zoology. After obtaining his degree, Greg spent a year at Hopevale Aboriginal Community on Cape York recording traditional plant use. His PhD examined the differences that kangaroo and cattle grazing have on pasture diversity and productivity and has more than 20 years’ experience with Landcare, killing weeds and restoring areas of degraded bushland. Greg lectures at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia and started lecturing on cruise ships in 1995. He has an infectious love for biodiversity and craves adventure.


Stefan Kredel - Expedition Leader & Geologist

Stefan grew up in the south of Germany and trained as a paramedic. He continued his studies and graduated from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, with a Masters in Geology and Palaeontology and has been lecturing on board expedition ships since 1998. Stefan’s travels have taken him to walk the Annapurna Circle Track in Nepal, follow the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu in Peru, and go deep inside some of the biggest copper, gold and diamond mines in the world.
