I have stayed here several times pre and post cruise to the Caribbean. It is so much more than just a gateway to the Bahamas and the Caribbean and well worth a stay.
Biscayne Bay - there are some fabulous shops and restaurants here. This is where you can take a river cruise excursion to see the homes of the rich and famous. Highly recommended. The cruise ships leave from this area and this is a great place to stay if you only have a night or two to spend in Miami before or after your cruise.
Ocean Drive - we stayed in a lovely beachfront hotel on our second visit to Miami. Ocean drive runs right along the Atlantic Ocean. With sandy beaches on one side of the street and high-end trendy bars, clubs, restaurants, and hotels on the other, this is the most popular area of South Beach. Some of the key landmarks include the Carlylse Hotel, the Clevelander club, and the mansion formerly owned by Versace. Collins Avenue is where you will find the iconic art deco hotels, European style pedestrian streets with designer shops and restaurants. It is definitely the place to people watch.
Shopping - No trip to the States would be complete without a visit to one of their vast shopping malls. Miami has no shortage of them. I’d recommend the Dolphin Mall, located just 5 miles west of Miami airport and is the largest in Miami-Dade with over 240 value orientated stores along with entertainment venues and dining.
If you are cruising the Caribbean, I definitely recommend you extend you stay in Miami.
