The new 99,500-ton cruise ship from Holland America Line is to be called the ms Koningsdam. The ship is being constructed at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy and is scheduled to be delivered in February 2016.
The ms Koningsdam will be the largest vessel in the fleet and will carry 2,650 guests with a crew of 1,025. While the ship will include all the much-loved features from other Holland America ships, the extra space will allow for new venues and public spaces alongside a range of innovative features.
The look of the ship will be informed by the work of Adam D. Tihany, one of the world’s top hospitality designers. He will be joined on this venture by acclaimed maritime designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten who previously worked on the designs for ms Nieuw Amsterdam and ms Eurodam. Together they will create a vessel with a contemporary atmosphere alongside the familiar comforts present on all Holland America ships.
The ms Koningsdam name reflects a new era for the Netherlands and Holland America Line. Koning means “king” in Dutch and pays homage to the newly crowned King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands since 1890. Since 1883, every passenger ship in the Holland America Line has carried the suffix “dam” and this new ship carries on that fine tradition.
“In choosing the name Koningsdam, we are honouring our rich Dutch heritage while reflecting that we’re entering a new era as a company,” said Stein Kruse, chief executive officer of the Holland America Group. “This new Pinnacle Class ship will be our largest, most contemporary vessel, and it was only fitting to give it a name that embodies great achievement for the future, while embracing timeless tradition.”
The Royal connection is longstanding and many Holland America ships have been christened by members of the Dutch Royal Family. The ms Eurodam was christened by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 2008 while in 2010 the ms Nieuw Amsterdam was christened by Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima.
Holland America Line has a rich heritage and was launched in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company with headquarters in Rotterdam. The Dutch Flag flies over each of the 15 ships in the fleet, which carries nearly one million passengers to more than 400 ports of call in 98 countries throughout the world.
