It’s that time of the week when we run down the latest updates from the cruise industry.  There's plenty of news this week with a ship newly named, a new venture with two cruise giants teaming up on the river, and the ship everyone is talking about arriving on UK shores.

Ovation of the Seas to sail from Australia

Ovation of the Seas, the latest ship on the Royal Caribbean International production line, will be deployed to Australia for the 2016/17 cruise season. The Quantum-class ship is currently under construction in Germany and will become the largest ship to be based in the country. Ovation’s sister ship, Anthem of the Seas will sail into Southampton on Monday (20 April 2015) before it begins a season sailing from the UK. These ships feature a number of revolutionary features including the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator and the North Star observation platform, which offers panoramic views, 300 feet above sea level.

Thomson Cruises names new ship

The newest ship from Thomson Cruises will be called Thomson Discovery when it launches in June 2016. The ship was previously known as Splendour of the Seas and sailed for Royal Caribbean International but was acquired by Thomson in March 2015 and will become the largest ship in the fleet with a capacity of 1,830. The ship will home port at Palma de Mallorca in Spain alongside Thomson Majesty.

Disney and AmaWaterways team up for new River Cruise venture

Traditionally, river cruises are not considered family- friendly but that could be set to change as Adventure by Disney enter the increasingly popular sector and have teamed up with experienced specialists AmaWaterways. The companies will run five week long cruises down the Danube beginning in summer 2016. Although Disney are involved, there won’t be any characters on board ship, instead the voyages will focus on providing local experiences in port with trained “Adventure Guides.” The summer voyages will explore eight cities in four countries throughout July, with the final cruise exploring Christmas markets in December.

Anthem of the Seas has arrived in Southampton

The latest ship from Royal Caribbean International, Anthem of the Seas, has arrived in Southampton ahead of its naming ceremony on Monday 20 April 2015. Passengers departing on the maiden voyage on 22 April will be able to enjoy incredible facilities across the ship’s 16 decks including robot bartenders, surf simulators, and state of the art performances of We Will Rock You in the 1,300 ship theatre. It is expected that 80,000 travellers will board the ship this summer as it spends its inaugural season in the UK. Cruise highlights include a 16 night tour of Mediterranean cities and a 14 night cruise exploring the Italian Mediterranean.
