Thinking About a Dubai Cruise This Winter?

For years, Dubai has been an easy answer to the question: “Where’s guaranteed sunshine in Winter?” Warm weather, slick cruise terminals, luxury ships – it ticks a lot of boxes.

But lately, some travellers are pausing before booking. Not necessarily cancelling plans altogether, just… reconsidering. Wanting somewhere that feels a bit more straightforward, a bit more relaxed, or simply different.

If that sounds like you, the good news is you’ve got options – and not second-best ones either. In many cases, these alternatives end up being the trips people talk about for years afterwards.

Let’s look at a few.

The Caribbean: The Obvious Choice (But for Good Reason)

If you type “Dubai cruise alternatives Winter” into Google, the Caribbean will come up again and again. And yes – it’s the obvious one. But it’s also considered as the safest bet.

There’s something reassuringly easy about Caribbean cruising:

  • You know the weather will show up (mid-20s and sunshine, almost guaranteed)
  • The sea tends to behave itself
  • And the whole experience is built around switching off properly

Where Dubai can feel polished and fast-paced, the Caribbean leans into doing very little, very well. Beach days, slow lunches, a swim, back on board. Repeat.

For travellers who were drawn to Dubai for its Winter reliability and premium feel, the Caribbean gives you that – but with softer edges.

And if you’re travelling long-haul anyway, it’s hard to argue with that first glimpse of turquoise water after a grey UK departure.

There’s something special about crystal-clear blue seas and white sandy beaches, and the Caribbean offers them in abundance. I love exploring the many different cultures just as much as I enjoy a relaxing day on the beach, and the Caribbean truly offers the perfect balance of both.

Mexico (Mexican Riviera): Warmer, Wilder, Less Predictable – in a Good Way

Mexico isn’t always considered in the shortlist for UK cruise travellers seeking some Winter sun, which is a bit surprising. Because if you’re asking, “where to cruise instead of Dubai?”, it actually answers that question quite well – just in a different way.

Most itineraries along the Pacific coast (think Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan) feel a little less polished than Dubai… but that’s part of the appeal.

You trade:

  • skyscrapers for colonial towns
  • designer malls for local markets
  • curated excursions for something that feels more spontaneous

And then there’s the food in Mexico. Honestly, for some travellers, that alone tips the balance.

It’s still warm, still comfortable, still very much a “Winter sun” escape. Just with more personality – and fewer people doing exactly the same thing as you.

Vegas to LA, with a cruise to Mexico. We did everything we could to experience the culture of where we visited. From visiting the Grand Canyon, going snorkelling in Mexico, and seeing so many whales in the wild – it was amazing. Mexico was also hotter than expected!

Canary Islands: The One People Nearly Always Come Back To

If long flights are putting you off, this is where the Canary Islands quietly win.

They don’t try to compete with Dubai or the Caribbean on tropical credentials – and they don’t need to.

What they offer instead is simplicity:

  • No jet lag
  • Familiar flight times
  • Winter sunshine that’s warm enough without being intense

Cruising the Canaries feels a bit more grounded. Less about ticking off bucket-list ports, more about enjoying the rhythm of the trip.

It’s also one of those options people underestimate – until they do it. And then they go back.

I love Spain and the Balearic Islands – Menorca is especially beautiful, with its tapas, sandy beaches, and relaxed pace of life. I also love the Canary Islands, which offer beautiful weather all year round.

Indian Ocean Cruises: If You Were Doing Dubai for the Luxury

Some travellers weren’t really choosing Dubai for Dubai. They were choosing it because it felt like a premium, slightly different Winter cruise – something a bit more special than the usual routes. If that’s you, it’s worth looking further afield.

Places like the Seychelles or Mauritius offer a similar sense of escape, but dialled up:

  • smaller ships
  • quieter ports
  • genuinely standout scenery

It’s less “city + cruise” and more total switch-off. The kind of trip where you lose track of what day it is (in a good way).

I’m very fortunate to have travelled to so many amazing destinations and never get tired of discovering new places and cultures. I’ve explored multiple destinations in Asia, including China, the Indian Ocean with Mauritius and the Maldives, numerous Caribbean islands, the USA, Canada, and many more – too many to mention!

So… Where Should You Cruise Instead of Dubai?

It depends on what you were really looking for in the first place.

If it were:

  • Guaranteed sunshine + ease ? Caribbean
  • Something different, with a bit of depth ? Mexico
  • Low effort, still warm ? Canary Islands
  • A more elevated, long-haul experience ? Indian Ocean

There’s no single “replacement” – just better fits depending on your priorities.

One Thing Worth Knowing Before You Book

Winter cruises tend to look wide open… until they’re not.

The best itineraries, flight times, and cabins (especially suites) tend to disappear earlier than people expect – particularly around Christmas and February half term.

And when you’re looking at long-haul options like the Caribbean or Mexico, the logistics matter more than they might seem at first glance.

That’s usually where speaking to someone who lives and breathes cruise itineraries can help – not in a pushy way, just in making sure everything lines up properly from the start.

Final Thought

For many people, Dubai will still be the right trip at some point. But if you’re hesitating – even slightly – this Winter might be the perfect excuse to try somewhere else. Because whether it’s the Caribbean, Mexico, or somewhere a bit further out, you’re not really compromising… You’re just choosing a different kind of sunshine.
