One of Western Europe's most ancient cities, founded 3,000 years ago by Phoenician merchants, Cadiz hugs Andalucia's sunlit Atlantic coast. It's a historic and intriguing seaport-from which Spain's galleons once sailed in quest of New World treasure - characterised by palm trees, look out towers and weathered old buildings. From here you can visit Jerez de la Frontera, centre of Spain's sherry production, and put to the test the creations of its many bodegas!

Visit the ruins of the Forum, view the splendors of the Sistine Chapel, or climb the Spanish Steps, once the heart of Rome's Bohemian Quarter. Rome has been a magnet luring the world's greatest artists, architects, and philosophers since the days of the Caesars.

Day 11 - Olbia/Sardinia

Situated on the beautiful North East coast of Sardinia, Olbia is often ignored in the dash for the fashionable Costa Smeralda resort, but the port has more to offer than first meets the eye. This handsome city, with its centro storico (historic centre), is laden with chic boutiques, wine bars and cafe-rimmed piazzas. It also has a number of historic structures and archaeological sites well worth discovering. These include the beautiful 11th century Basilica of San Simplicio and the Church of St. Paul Apostle. Several of Sardinia's impressive, fortress-like Nuraghes still remain including the hilltop Nuraghe Riu Mulinu. Called the ‘happy city’ by the Greeks, ancient Olbia is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy in the soothing Sardinian sunshine. On the palm-lined waterfront to the east, the Museo Archeologico di Olbia has Roman warships to discover.Show less Just north from the city is Costa Smeralda, a millionaire’s paradise which is popular with celebrities and wealthy business people who visit to top-up their tan on the gorgeous golden-sand beaches – said to be among the finest on earth – and make the most of the warm, crystal clear waters.

Day 12 - Alghero

Alghero lies in the northwest corner of this rugged and unspoilt island - perhaps the only region of Italy without motorways! The town blends the appeal of a modern beach resort with the Catalan charm (Sardinia was long ruled by Spain, and Alghero remains the most Spanish town of the island) of its battle worn historic quarter, clustered around the picturesque port. From here you can visit the 12th century fortress town of Castelsardo with its spectacular cliff top views over sea and mountain.

Day 13 - Mahon, Spain

The second of Spain's four Balearic Islands, Menorca has an engaging charm perfectly embodied in the easily explored capital of Mahon with its attractive shops, outdoor market and the traditional buildings of its hilly old quarter. One of Europe's best natural harbours - where the 18th century British fleet sheltered when Menorca was ruled from London (Admiral Nelson's visits are commemorated still by the local Nelson Gin!)
