A repositioning cruise, also sometimes refered to colloquially as "repo cruises" or "transfer cruises", is where the cruise operator (such as P&O Cruises) is moving their vessel to a new destination to begin a new set of itineraries perhaps due to the changing seasons. Many ships spend summer in Europe before cruising the Caribbean in winter months to offer warm weather cruising all year around while Transpacific and cruises through the Panama Canal are also polular repositioning cruises on many travellers' bucket lists.
Sometimes a business decision will be made to move a ship to more attractive destinations. In recent years many operators have transferred ships to Dubai as interest to meet new tourist demands.
Rather than leaving the vessel empty for the voyage, tickets are sold for this alternative cruise experience. Due to the nature of these cruises, the point of embarkation will differ from the point of disembarkation.
Repositioning cruises often offer great value to customers as the primary purpose is not to provide a wide range of excursions, but to move the ship to a new primary port.
