Koningsdam in Alaska: Highlights, Tips, and What Surprised Us Most
Our team had the pleasure of sailing through Alaska on Koningsdam, experiencing the itinerary, the ship, and the small details that matter most when choosing the right cruise. The following blog gives you an in-depth, honest review based on our team's first-hand experience. After reading, you’ll better understand what to expect on the journey, expert tips and tricks, and all the reasons why Holland America Line is seriously worth considering… particularly if Alaska is on your list.
Why Choose Holland America for an Alaska Cruise?
One thing to remember... Alaska cruises aren't your typical cruise holiday. The scenery is the main event, and the cruise line you choose plays a big role in how well you experience it.
There’s always a noticeable shift that happens a day or two into an Alaska cruise. People slow down. Conversations move from “what’s next?” to “did you see that glacier this morning?” Onboard Koningsdam, Holland America Line’s flagship in Alaska, that shift feels intentional… designed, even.
Holland America Line has been sailing to Alaska for decades, and that experience shows. From onboard programming to route planning, the focus is clearly on connecting passengers with the destination – not distracting from it.
Some of the standout advantages include:
- Priority docking positions closest to the port
- Industry experts and naturalists on hand to provide context during key moments
- Well-paced itineraries that prioritise scenic cruising as much as port stops
- A more relaxed onboard atmosphere with modern and luxurious features throughout
It’s not about doing more – it’s about seeing more… and seeing it properly.
What our Team thought...
“Holland America has the longest relationship with Alaska, and that really shows throughout the itinerary. They consistently secured the best berths in every port, which made exploring much easier. The naturalists on board were some of the best I've experienced. They were always available to answer questions about the wildlife and destinations, which added so much to the cruise. The service was 10 out of 10 throughout, and the ship itself felt like the perfect size for Alaska. I'd also highly recommend Holland America for anyone with accessibility requirements. Unlike some other cruise lines, we did not need to tender during our itinerary, which made the docking arrangements much more straightforward. If possible, I'd strongly recommend booking a Balcony cabin. It gives you the perfect vantage point for photographs and wildlife spotting. The onboard naturalists also moved around the ship at set times, and guests could stop and ask questions whenever they wanted, which really enhanced the experience.”

First Impressions of Koningsdam
Koningsdam strikes a balance that’s harder to find than you might expect. It’s a modern ship, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. There’s space to breathe, and more importantly for Alaska, space to look.
The design leans into neutral tones, natural light, and open sightlines. You’re rarely far from a window, and that matters when the landscape outside is constantly changing.
What stood out early on:
- Wraparound promenade decks that actually encourage outdoor viewing
- Multiple indoor observation areas – useful when temperatures drop
- Less crowding at peak viewing times compared to larger, more densely packed ships
Even on sea days, there’s a quiet sense that the ship is built around the destination.
What our Team thought...
“I originally thought it would be geared mainly towards an older generation, but there were far more families and children on board than I expected. There was a really good mix of ages, which actually makes it a great choice for a family Alaska cruise. There were educational activities for both kids and adults, and the entertainment was excellent. One of the highlights was the wildlife expert on board, who gave talks about the region and the animals you'd be seeing. They'd even explain how to identify individual whales by their tail markings. You could also donate to help name a whale. It felt very immersive and added a lot to the overall experience. The cabins were also brilliant. One thing that really stood out was the size of the bathrooms – they were much larger than expected. The Elemis toiletries were a lovely touch too. It's those premium little extras that make a real difference when you're spending time on board.”

The Alaska Cruise Itinerary: What You Actually Experience
While itineraries can vary slightly, you can expect to see a mix of well-known ports and extended scenic cruising – arguably the highlight of any Alaska trip. Each stop offers something slightly different, and the itinerary doesn’t feel repetitive. In practice, what stands out is how accessible everything feels. You’re not spending hours navigating large ports or dealing with long transfers – most experiences begin almost immediately after stepping off the ship.
Typical ports include:
Juneau
Alaska’s capital, surrounded by mountains and accessible only by air or sea
What our Team thought...
“We did a whale-watching tour and visited a glacier. The glacier walk was actually fantastic for spotting wildlife too, especially if you're travelling in May. The whale watching was excellent and something I'd definitely recommend. Juneau is Alaska's capital, so it's busy and full of energy. The guides were brilliant and shared loads of information about the city, the wildlife and the surrounding area. We also saw bald eagles. The scenery is just incredible – there really aren't words to describe it.”

Skagway
Famous around the world for its Gold Rush history and scenic railway
What our Team thought...
“Skagway is much smaller, but the scenery is absolutely incredible. At times it feels like you're sitting right in the middle of a fjord. One of my favourite moments was sitting in the hot tub surrounded by mountains and stunning landscapes. The White Pass Railway was excellent too. It genuinely feels like stepping into a Western film, but in an authentic way rather than a touristy one.”

Ketchikan
A compact town with a strong Native Alaskan heritage and easy access to wildlife excursions
What our Team thought...
“Ketchikan is probably the most tourist-focused of the ports, but it still has plenty of charm. There's a lot of history here, and it's presented really tastefully. We visited places connected to the town's colourful past, including Dolly's House, and learned about the area's fishing heritage. The world's oldest salmon cannery is located nearby too. The town itself is compact, walkable and incredibly pretty.”

Vancouver
Known as the gateway to Alaska, with urban attractions, scenic waterfronts and stunning mountain views
What our Team thought...
“If you're sailing from Vancouver, I'd highly recommend doing the Sea to Sky Gondola beforehand. It sets a great tone for the holiday and eases you into the adventure that's about to begin.”

Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier
One of Alaska’s most dramatic routes, featuring granite walls and floating ice
What our Team thought...
“This was one of the standout moments of the entire cruise for me. The scenery was absolutely stunning. Holland America actually open up the bow of the ship, allowing guests to get incredible views of the glacier and surrounding landscapes… a truly unique experience!”

Wildlife in Alaska: What You’ll Actually See
One of the most common questions about Alaska cruises is simple: Will I actually see wildlife? For our team, on their sailing, the answer was yes – but with a caveat. Alaska isn’t a theme park, and sightings aren’t scheduled. What Koningsdam does well is maximise your chances.
Passengers consistently spot:
- Humpback whales surfacing near the ship
- Bald eagles along the shoreline
- Sea otters floating in calmer waters
- Distant bears along forest edges (best viewed with binoculars)
The crew actively communicates sightings when possible, and there’s a shared sense onboard that something could appear at any moment.
Wildlife is frequently spotted from the ship itself, but there are also plenty of shore excursions designed around Alaska’s incredible natural environment, including wildlife sanctuaries and experiences that bring guests closer to the region’s famous animals. Even when exploring independently, there are opportunities to encounter wildlife while out on land each day.
Another advantage is that Koningsdam doesn't rely on tender ports during the itinerary. This means guests can get ashore more quickly, enjoy a longer time in port, and often be among the first to depart on booked excursions, giving them even more time to make the most of each destination.
What our Team thought...
“We saw just about everything – hundreds of bald eagles and plenty of whales. They look even more spectacular in person and seeing them in the wild feels completely different from seeing them in photos. I've never used binoculars so much in my life. You can hire them on board, but I'd definitely recommend bringing your own if you can. One of the highlights was seeing more than 50 sea lions piled onto a rock, rolling around and even doing somersaults. Bears were actually my priority, but we didn't get as close as I'd hoped. You have a good chance of spotting them in May, but June is usually the best time. That's when the salmon start gathering in the rivers, waterfalls and lakes, and the bears follow.”

Onboard Experience: What It’s Like Day to Day
The onboard atmosphere is noticeably different from what you might expect if you’ve cruised elsewhere. There’s no pressure to fill every hour. Instead, the experience feels more self-paced.
Dining and Food Quality
Dining on Koningsdam leans towards consistency rather than spectacle.
- Main dining room menus reflect regional influences, including Alaskan seafood
- Casual dining options are easy to access and rarely overcrowded
- Speciality restaurants offer a step up for those looking for a quieter evening
Meals feel like part of the day rather than a scheduled event.
What our Team thought...
“The dining really reflects the destinations you're visiting, with plenty of fresh seafood featured throughout the cruise. If you're not normally someone who eats seafood, Alaska is the place to try it because it doesn't get much fresher. There was so much choice in the restaurants, and the atmosphere remained relaxed throughout the voyage. There were formal evenings available for those who wanted them, but nothing ever felt forced. The venues themselves felt small and intimate, which created a really comfortable atmosphere.”

Entertainment and Enrichment
Evenings are active, but not overwhelming.
You can expect to enjoy:
- Live music venues (a standout feature onboard)
- Low-key theatre performances
- Destination-focused talks and presentations
During the day, enrichment plays a bigger role than traditional entertainment and the biggest highlight is the immersive opportunites within the region.
What our Team thought...
“I really enjoyed the destination talks. They were informative, relevant to the itinerary and helped build excitement for the excursions we had planned. The live music was fantastic. BB King's Blues Club was probably my favourite venue, while Billboard Onboard was brilliant as well – two musicians taking requests all evening. We spent most of our nights there. BB King's had more of a party atmosphere, and plenty of people stayed up late enjoying the music. The dress code throughout the cruise was very relaxed. Lots of people came straight to dinner in their walking gear. The only place where guests tended to dress up a bit more was the speciality restaurants. Most venues wrapped up around midnight, but it never felt disappointing because everyone was excited about the next day's adventure. I probably spoke to more fellow guests on this cruise than on any other. Everyone was sharing stories from their excursions and wildlife sightings. People seemed genuinely happy to be there and united by the same reason for travelling. It completely exceeded my expectations.”

Viewing Spaces: A Key Advantage for Alaska
This is where Koningsdam genuinely excels.
Instead of relying on a single crowded observation lounge, the ship offers multiple viewing options:
- Outdoor decks at various levels
- Indoor lounges with panoramic windows
- Private balcony cabins for uninterrupted views
It reduces the need to “compete” for space when something worth seeing appears.
What our Team thought...
“Koningsdam is the perfect ship for Alaska. One of the biggest advantages is that they open up the bow on Deck 5, so you can stand right at the front of the ship and enjoy completely uninterrupted glacier views. It does get busy, but there's no need to worry. The views from a balcony cabin are incredible too. When viewing glaciers, the captain rotates the ship 360 degrees so everyone gets the chance to enjoy the scenery and capture the perfect photo. It means people don't have to fight for the best spot. Orange Night was great fun too – everyone dressed in orange and there were themed cocktails throughout the evening. The Crow's Nest is another great spot, with huge panoramic windows offering incredible views. There was always a fun atmosphere on board. Someone would shout, 'Bear!' and suddenly everyone would be rushing over to the windows to catch a glimpse.”

Who Is Koningsdam Best Suited For?
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all cruise, and that’s part of its strength.
Koningsdam is particularly well-suited to:
- Travellers who prioritise scenery over onboard attractions
- Couples or small groups looking for a quieter experience
- First-time Alaska cruisers who want a well-rounded itinerary
- Repeat cruisers who prefer a more refined atmosphere
It may not appeal as strongly to those looking for high-energy entertainment in the form of water parks and live performances.
What our Team thought...
“Holland America attracts some of the best destination speakers and naturalists, so it's ideal for travellers looking for a more immersive Alaska experience. I saw more families than I expected, but I'd still say it particularly suits adults and older travellers who want to really engage with the destination. It's also an excellent choice for anyone with accessibility requirements.”

Practical Tips for Alaska Cruising
A few observations that are worth keeping in mind:
- Layering is essential – temperatures shift quickly, especially on deck
- Binoculars make a difference for wildlife spotting
- Early mornings are often the most rewarding for scenery
- Balcony cabins are best – but not essential given the ship’s public viewing areas
These aren’t deal-breakers, but they do shape how much you get out of the experience.
What our Team thought...
“Dress like an onion – layers are essential. One minute you'll be cold, the next you'll be too warm. I'd also recommend packing moisturiser because the climate is very different from back home. Binoculars are another must-have, especially if you're planning wildlife excursions… they're invaluable on bear-viewing tours. If you're looking to avoid the crowds and get the best photographs, a Balcony cabin is absolutely worth considering. I'd recommend choosing the starboard side. As you sail north from Vancouver, you'll spend a lot of time looking towards the coastline, so you'll often have better scenery views from that side of the ship. If you're interested in photography, consider bringing a proper camera. You'll capture images you'll want to look back on forever.”

Final Thoughts: Is a Koningsdam Alaska Cruise Worth It?
From what our team experienced, Koningsdam delivers on what an Alaska cruise should be. It doesn’t try to compete with the destination – it supports it.
The ship provides:
- Comfortable, well-designed spaces for viewing
- An itinerary that highlights Alaska’s most iconic landscapes
- A calm, considered onboard atmosphere with opportunity for immersion
This is the kind of Alaska experience where the highlights aren’t staged or scheduled. They happen naturally, often quietly, and sometimes unexpectedly. And when they do, the ship is designed to make sure you don’t miss them.
What our Team thought...
“Yes – to put it bluntly, you need to experience it for yourself. I'd go back in a heartbeat. For Alaska in particular, Holland America would now be my number one recommendation. Having experienced it myself, it's the cruise I'd confidently recommend to anyone looking to explore the region properly.”
